Film slide projected onto silk organza streched around a wooden frame
size
61.2cm x 58cm
This work consists of ninety-five film slides drawn from a video of an eagle in flight, projected onto a suspended panel of silk organza. Positioned just off the wall, the fabric catches the light and produces a shifting shadow, allowing the projection itself to move and breathe. The image is never fixed: it trembles, drifts, and transforms with each slight disturbance in the air, echoing the fragility of memory and the uncertainty of recollection.
The eagle functions here as both subject and metaphor. It is a figure of strength and freedom, yet its solitary passage through the sky also conveys distance and absence. In the context of my own experience of early childhood loss, the bird becomes a vessel for grief: carrying fragments of memory, soaring beyond reach, embodying both longing and release.
The use of film slides, discrete frames of a larger movement, mirrors the fractured way memory often endures. Just as a child recalls a parent not as a continuous narrative but as flashes and fragments, the eagle’s flight is broken down into moments, reassembled through projection. What remains is not a whole, but an impression, fragile and incomplete.
The projection onto silk organza introduces another layer of meaning. The fabric’s translucency suggests both presence and absence, surface and shadow, the tangible and the elusive. Its slight motion in the air allows the work to embody the theme Winds of Change: grief itself is never still, shifting continually with time, memory, and experience.
Ultimately, this work is a meditation on loss and transformation. It seeks to hold onto what cannot be held, to give form to what resists permanence. In the flight of the eagle, in the flicker of slides, and in the tremor of silk, the work attempts to find beauty within absence, and movement within grief
